Salt Lake City | Wednesday, 8 February 2012 00:00:00 -0700 |
Like many other Utahns, we recall fondly the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Clearly the games were a community effort made possible in large part by the thousands of volunteers that lent their time and talents to welcome the many visitors and athletes to our state. It was a thrill to help support these efforts and those of the organizing committee to make the games a success.

Michael Otterson, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' (Mormon) Public Affairs managing director, will address the importance of making all people, including members of religious organizations, aware of the dangers of affinity fraud. While senior Church leaders have repeatedly warned against fraud, this is the first time a Church representative has spoken at the Fraud College.

Salt Lake City | Tuesday, 17 January 2012 00:00:00 -0700 |
Last Thursday, Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, H. David Burton, joined 38 prominent leaders of different faiths in signing a letter advocating traditional marriage and religious freedom.

The letter, titled “Marriage and Religious Freedom: Fundamental Goods That Stand or Fall Together,” stated that “the promotion and protection of marriage — the union of one man and one woman as husband and wife — is a matter of the common good and serves the wellbeing of the couple, of children, of civil society and all people.”

Read the letter’s full contents here.

Salt Lake City | Thursday, 12 January 2012 00:00:00 -0700 |
On the “On Faith” blog today, Michael Otterson comments on the study on Mormons released today by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life:

Over the years we’ve learned quite a bit from opinion polls about how Americans view Mormons. Clearly, there is a big knowledge gap about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, complicated by a lot of erroneous assumptions.

But this morning we saw something different with the release of an important study from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, which put questions to Mormons themselves about how they see their place in the religious and secular world, and what they think is important about their own faith. It delivers some fascinating data.

Read the full blog post at the Washington Post here

Read the Church's official news release regarding the Pew study

Salt Lake City | Tuesday, 3 January 2012 00:00:00 -0700 |
This article is a broad introduction for a forthcoming series of articles on religious freedom.

For many people in the world, there are few things more precious than freedom. Freedom — the power to live as one would choose — is one of the great sources of human dignity. Exercising freedom correctly is also one of the great responsibilities that humans hold. We continue to grapple with how to define our freedoms, how to understand them, and how they should be both cultivated and tempered. At the heart of these questions, we find one of the most fundamental of all freedoms: freedom of religion.
